Science-based nutrition with Valio: Supporting healthy aging through innovation

Milk powder and lab equipment.

At Valio, we believe that innovation is driven by curiosity and the desire to improve lives. Our latest research is breaking new ground in understanding how dairy ingredients, like the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) and hydrolysed protein, can support healthy aging.

This time, we’re exploring these connections through a unique lens—using the C. elegans roundworm, a scientifically valuable model for studying aging and nutrition. Our collaboration was initiated by Dr. Olli Matilainen from the University of Helsinki, who has extensive experience using C. elegans in various research contexts, including aging and neuromuscular mechanisms.

Unlocking new insights with C. elegans

The C. elegans roundworm, a small but powerful model organism, is commonly used in scientific research due to its short lifespan and biological similarities to humans. In Valio’s recent study, we leveraged this model to gain deeper insights into how MFGM and hydrolysed protein can influence physical function and muscle health over time.

“Our research with C. elegans provided a controlled environment to explore the potential of MFGM in supporting physical function,” explains Anu Turpeinen, PhD, Nutrition Research Manager at Valio.

“This unique model organism for aging research can quickly provide biological insights into how dietary interventions, like MFGM combined with hydrolysed protein, prevent aging-associated decline. Our results showed that this combination improved fitness in C. elegans, further confirming the biological activity of these products,” adds Dr. Matilainen.

Transforming research into real-world solutions

The C. elegans study is part of Valio’s broader commitment to understanding and enhancing the health benefits of dairy. The findings suggest that MFGM, a unique component of milk fat, and hydrolysed proteins can support mobility and muscle function, which are essential for maintaining independence and quality of life in aging adults. These insights from our C. elegans study reinforce the conclusions of Valio’s recent clinical research on the benefits of products rich in MFGM and protein for seniors.

“By confirming these benefits across different models, we’re able to develop products that are not only backed by science but also meet the real-world needs of aging populations,” Turpeinen notes.

Meeting the needs of a growing market

The demand for functional foods and beverages that promote healthy aging is expanding rapidly as the global population ages. Valio’s dairy ingredients are specifically designed to address these needs, providing high-quality protein, essential vitamins, and minerals that support muscle mass, cognitive health, and overall well-being.

Products like our Valio Eila™ Nutri F+ lactose-free milk protein powder are already making an impact in the market, offering versatile applications—from ready-to-drink beverages to high-protein snacks—that are easy to incorporate into daily diets. These solutions are tailored to the preferences of older adults, who seek convenient, nutritious, and delicious options that align with their health goals.

Valio’s commitment to innovation and partnership

Valio stands out for our innovative ingredients and our commitment to quality and scientific rigour, continuing the legacy of Nobel laureate A.I. Virtanen, who laid the foundations for Valio’s research tradition. We are leading research on how dairy supports healthy aging and help manufacturers create differentiated products for the growing demand for nutritious foods and beverages for aging adults.

Building on the insights from our C. elegans study, we are now conducting a clinical trial to examine the cognitive benefits of MFGM for individuals aged 60 and older. This research complements our earlier findings and aims to strengthen the evidence for the role of our dairy innovations in supporting healthy aging.

With these advancements, Valio’s team is ready to support you with product development from concept to market, ensuring that your products are both effective and enjoyable for consumers.
